Down With Catcalling!

Down With Catcalling!

With all the talk of feminism and women’s rights in today’s world,
more issues and situations in which women are degraded and treated as
objects are constantly being brought up by women themselves. Walking
almost everywhere like three peas in a pod, my two friends and I have
recently been finding it hard to walk anywhere without some idiotic
group of boys whistling and shouting phrases we (or any other woman for a
matter of fact) rather not hear from random slimy boys ever in our
lifetimes. This, my friends, is the absolutely disgusting world of
catcalling. I am so appalled and tired of not being able to walk just a
block out of my own neighborhood without being shouted at for my “NICE
LEGS!” or my apparent “FANTASTIC ASS THANKS TO THOSE JEANS!” Even when I

am driving in my car―that’s right, I don’t even have to be roaming the
streets for sickly men to be shouting displeasing phrases at me!―they
ALWAYS find some way to whistle at me or give me some type of look they
think is “sexy.” I am so sickened by these men who keep licking their
grimy lips at young girls, some of these girls only being no older than
the young age of 7! All over the world, this is happening to women of
all ages, sizes, and races; I’ve witnessed it, you’ve witnessed it, I’ve
experienced it, and you’ve most likely experienced it as well.

But the real question is, why?
Why do men feel the need to shout these horrific and degrading lines to every single woman they see on the street?
Do they find comedy in this?
Do they find these sentences of utterly disturbing strings of words to be compliments?

No matter if any of these are actual causes (although we all know
they are), catcalling is, and forever will be, awful and not moral, no
matter how much of a “compliment” a catcaller thinks it is. This is only
a small problem that women have to face, however, it still affects each
and every one of us and causes us to become greatly bewildered with
every harsh word that leaves the unruly catcaller’s lips. It also causes
young girls to grow up in an environment that throws them into

situations like these that lead them to believe that these statements
truly are compliments and they should accept that these gross statements
are how they should be complimented. It’s sad for me to say that I’ve
been cussing out more boys in old pickup trucks for telling me to “HIKE
UP YOUR SKIRT YOU SLUT” or even just “BE GUTSY FOR ME AND SHOW ME YOUR
TITS” than I’ve actually been able to hold a conversation with.
Catcalling makes us women feel as if we are just some of your pathetic
action figures who you pretend to have a divine relationship with, but
we are all so much more than that. Next time someone catcalls you or you
witness someone getting catcalled, scream your heart out back at them.
Stand up to them and tear apart their horrid catcalls with your voice
and your words. Let your girl (or guy) power destroy the catcallers!
